Rare Disease Day

WHEREAS: approximately 1 in 12 Canadians—many of whom are children—are affected by one of over 7,000 identified rare diseases; and

WHEREAS: these individuals, along with their families and caregivers, often face significant challenges, including delayed diagnoses, limited treatment options, and a lack of accessible support resources; and

WHEREAS: 300 million people worldwide live with a rare disease, yet many conditions remain undiagnosed for years due to limited research and awareness; and

WHEREAS: Rare Disease Day, observed annually on the last day of February (February 29 in leap years), aims to raise awareness and generate change for those affected by rare diseases; and

WHEREAS: awareness leads to action by helping drive research funding, improving healthcare services, and promoting workplace and community inclusion for people with rare diseases; and

WHEREAS: this day unites patients, families, caregivers, medical professionals, researchers, and policymakers to advocate for improved healthcare, increased research, and greater public understanding of rare diseases; and

WHEREAS: the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury recognizes the importance of supporting individuals and families affected by rare diseases within our community.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That His Worship Mayor James Leduc and Members of Council proclaim February 28, 2026, as Rare Disease Day in BWG.
