BWG Proclaims Nigerian Independence Day

Nigerian Independence Day

October 1, 2025

WHEREAS: on October 1, 1960, Nigeria gained its independence from British rule, marking the beginning of a sovereign nation rich in history, culture, and diversity; and

WHEREAS: Nigerian Independence Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Nigerians at home and abroad; and

WHEREAS: the Nigerian-Canadian community has made significant contributions to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of our town, enriching our shared community life; and

WHEREAS: this day is an occasion to honour the traditions, heritage, and values that Nigerians bring to our community while recognizing the importance of unity, pride, and progress;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That His Worship Mayor James Leduc and Members of Council proclaim October 1, 2025, as Nigerian Independence Day in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.

The flag-raising will take place on Wednesday, October 4 at 2 pm (outside) at the Court House Courtyard - 57 Holland Street
