BWG Proclaims Jamaican Independence Day

Jamaican Independence Day – August 6, 2025

WHEREAS on August 6, 1962, Jamaica proudly declared its independence from British rule, becoming a sovereign nation and marking a pivotal moment in the history of the Caribbean and the world; and

WHEREAS Jamaican Independence Day is a time to reflect on the strength, resilience, and cultural richness of the Jamaican people, and to celebrate their extraordinary contributions to global music, food, language, literature, and sport; and

WHEREAS the Jamaican community in Bradford West Gwillimbury plays an integral role in the social, cultural, and economic fabric of our municipality, enriching our diversity and fostering a spirit of unity and inclusion; and

WHEREAS this day is an opportunity to honour the legacy of Jamaican trailblazers and to recognize the enduring values of independence, self-determination, and national pride that continue to inspire generations;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That His Worship Mayor James Leduc and Members of Council proclaim August 6 2025, as Jamaican Independence Day in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.
